Coating Piles with STOPAQ

Based in client inspections a number of 6 piles located at the Vesta terminal in the port of Antwerp were selected to be protected against corrosion due to the condition they were in.

To ensure optimal integrity of the piles, K&C DIVING worked out a detailed plan and proposal covering the piles by making use of the innovative STOPAQ Corrosion Preventative materials. K&C Diving is proud partner of the Seal for Life Waterfront Brigade providing exclusive Corrosion preventative and Sealing solutions.

Full and long term Corrosion prevention of the 6 piles required protection both below the waterline as well above the waterline. For the prevention below the waterline the corrosion preventative layer to exist of STOPAQ SZ Wrappingband covered by a tough Moisture Cured PU Wrap. Above the waterline the corrosion prevention is achieved by using the STOPAQ Wrappingband CZ covered by a self-amalgamating crosslinked PE wrap. This crosslinked PE offering a flexible but tough mechanical protective layer and performs extremely well in harsh UV environments.

By making use of a pontoon K&C Diving settled in the terminal at the piles. As a first step, the piles are cleaned according to St2 conditions using a high pressure lance and a nailgun. Sandblasting or other extensive surface pre-treatment is not needed as the STOPAQ materials adhesive characteristic does not depend an mechanical fixation, therefore no anchor pattern is needed.

After the surface treatment, the pipe piles are coated partially above the water surface with the STOPAQ Wrappingband CZ. This visco-elastic material tape does not harden or age and is completely harmless to underwater life and the user. This material will migrate into the substrate it is applied to and fully “wetting” the steel substrate filling even the finest pores due to its Cold Flow characteristics.

Once the piles are partially coated above water with the Stopaq CZ material, divers start with the coating of the underwater part. For application on Submerged objects STOPAQ has developed coating materials which can be applied on wet substrates showing the same high performance corrosion prevention level as the “standard” STOPAQ Coating materials. In this specific application the materials areapplied 1.5m below the water surface up to 0.3m above the surface (20cm overlapping the already present Wrappingband CZ). This sectionis called the "Splash Zone".

Next step in the system installation is the application of an intermediate PVC tape. This flexibel tape is applied with tension whichaccelerates the viscous STOPAQ material to flow into the rough substrate.

As final and extreme Mechanical impact resistant Outerlayer the STOPAQ Outerglass Shield XT is installed. This PU wrap material hardenswhen in contact with water, like a plaster, and can be applied under water.
Once the hardening proces is done, the material becomes the perfect protection for the STOPAQ Corrosion preventative materials underneath.

STOPAQ Corrosion Prevention Horton Sphere Pillars + On-Site Machining

In this project, Oiltanking Stolthaven Antwerp gave K&C Diving the task of providing a complete corrosion prevention for 10 Horton Sphere pillars. The base of the supports (which spins around the sphere) also had to be cleaned and coated.

For the corrosion prevention of the base Sealtaq Repair Filler, EasyQote Paste, Basecoat and Topcoat were used. The Repair Filler was used to fill the space between the metal and concrete. After that, EasyQote Paste was used to wrap the metal base. Then we used the EasyQote Basecoat to seal the structure. A topcoat was utilised as extra protection against UV radiation and other factors.

When placing this sphere, OTSA chose to provide "rain caps" with the pillars. These caps, however, had a counterfeit effect. Under the "rain caps" the posts were severely corroded. K&C Diving proposed a plan to remove it by means of "On-Site Machining". By using this new technique, we managed to remove these caps in just 4 days without any spark formation. Therefore this "cold" cutting is an optimal technique for areas with strict safety precautions.

The stairway support posts were next up. This coating was accomplished by the STOPAQ Casing Filler. To do this in a correct way, the STOPAQ compound was preheated to + - 70 ° C for full fluidity. The STOPAQ compound was then used to fill the pipe piles. When the STOPAQ Casing Filler cools again, it will still remain elastic but less viscous. This ensures a complete coating inside the support posts. The grid support was then finished with EasyQote Basecoat, after which the grid was mounted back.

After removing the "rain caps" these affected sections had to be re-coated. The surface was first cleaned by means of an ATEX abrasive device according to ST3 conditions. By using STOPAQ Wrappingband CZH and STOPAQ Outerwrap HSPEX, we guarantee a permanent corrosion prevention for the coated surfaces.

Coating steel beams using EasyQote Basecoat (Seal For Life)

The nursing home Armonea Gravenkasteel located in Sint-Amands had suffered from water infiltration in the cellars of their buildings. Due to the water infiltration and cracks in the walls of the basement the beams began to rust. To counteract this course, Armonea decided to fully coat the HEB support beams to prevent any form of corrosion and osmosis.
 

K&C DIVING proposed a plan using EasyQote Basecoat. This visco-elastic Wrappingband belongs to the Seal For Life products range (STOPAQ) and provides an innovative look at coatings.

The EasyQote basecoat is very similar to the STOPAQ Wrappingband but was specially developed for structural steel.

The HEB beams had to be completely cleaned before the coating process could start. This means that all  loose rust and biological growth had to be removed to ensure the flowing capabilities of the products. This only took several hours.

After the surface cleaning, our employees began with the coating process.
The beams were heated by means of a burner to ensure proper adhesion of the EasyQote Basecoat Wrappingband to the steel. Once a beam had been heated to about 35 degrees, an employee began to cover the beam with EasyQote Basecoat. This process was repeated for all beams.

Due to the ease of use of the Wrappingbands, K&C DIVING was able to coat +15 beams over a 2 day period.

Salvage mission Stier tug boat

K&C Diving was contracted to carry out diving works for the salvage mission of the Stier tug boat.

Through our years of experience in performing all kinds of salvages, both in Belgium and in West Africa (Ghana and Nigeria) we had more than enough expertise to realize the storage of the Stier in a very short time.

In less than one day the ship was salvaged.

K&C Diving has often been asked to provide diving assistance in carrying out salvage work of all kinds. It is not just sunken ships or other moving equipment that needs salvaging. In many cases, salvage missions are also required by works to increase the draught of waterways, to remove wrecks of cars, containers, industrial equipment, old dolphins, broken or damaged piles or, as we have done ourselves, remove large objects such as a foot pile of an oil rig.

K&C Diving was asked to provide diving assistance in the salvaging of a more than 350 tons spudcan with base which had broken off a drilling rig in front  off the coast of Nigeria. Since the pole was located at 30m depth in an oil field the salvage and removal were to be dispatched asap. In consultation with K&C Diving  a procedure was established by our client Dredging International to achieve this salvage. Given the weather conditions, time constraints and the local conditions this salvage should be considered a very complex challenge that was brought to a successful conclusion with a thorough approach.

Pouring underwater concrete

Concrete can be poured both above and under water. Along with a method adapted for underwater pouring a product is added to avoid leaching of the concrete during the pouring. In many cases, underwater concrete is deposited with a specially provided construction (float) in order to obtain a defined bulk level. In applications, such as construction sites, the underwater concrete is not the final product but a buffer to keep rising groundwater outside the construction zone and thus, in addition to drying off, to create a workplace in which the structure can be built in normal circumstances.

K&C Diving already has extensive experience with the pouring of underwater concrete in various projects. In construction pits, in the pouring of soil protecting bitumen mats as well as in laying concrete floors on the soil. In addition, K&C Diving itself developed an improved version of the traditional float system.

Given the high demand of existing customers K&C Diving launched a separate division which will focus on shipping activities.

In the past, these works were usually carried out through subcontracting. For several years, however, we have intended to further develop this department independently. We have gained enough experience over the years and are now recognized by the Bureau Veritas. As a diving company, we want to expand this section to provide the necessary service to our customers both in Europe and in West Africa.

In the Belgian ports, we already have a vast experience in performing minor repairs and propeller polishings. With our African subsidiary, we want to expand these services by performing hull-cleanings and major repairs underwater.

For the inland shipping, we are already well established, but we also wish to offer even better and more flexible service to these customers in the near future.

One of our targets was to reduce waiting times for inland shipping in case of emergencies. We at K&C Diving are confident that we can be at your service within three hours anywhere in Belgium and this 24h to 24h.

In order to achieve all our goals, we intend to continue to invest in our shipping department to thus further optimize our service.

Van Damme Lock door 4: Salvage rail and protective welding on longitudinal carriers

The rails and mountings of door 4 of the Van Damme lock were in bad condition. Merely one side of the rail was still operable while the other rail was already disassembled.
The assignment was to salvage one rail by applying additional terminals, which were welded onto the longitudinal carrier. In addition, a protective plate was welded on to the second longitudinal carrier across the entire width of the lock chamber.

This job was assigned to us by the Flemish government in cooperation with the Baeck & Janssen firm. Using a specially built habitat, which was mounted on to the rails, the job was executed by K&C Diving divers. For the execution of this particular assignment, most of the equipment used was created by K&C Diving.

Under the trade name K&C Construct (our steel division), led by Roel Wijgerde, we have already carried out various repair works to steel structures over the years. This after collisions, emergencies or in the context of adjustment works on existing constructions. Our steel division is not only active in their own workshop but can also deploy specialized craftsmen to working sites. Usually welding, assembly works or cutting works are included in the jobs we perform as a specialist subcontractor as part of larger projects.

Even old dolphins, mooring masts, jetties and all kinds of sustainable hardwood constructions or solitary wooden poles that are to be demolished, can be, using specially adapted hydraulic chainsaws for underwater work, simply cleared or sawn to the desired height.
